The
Department
of Human genetics was established in the year 1985-86 to provide comprehensive genetic diagnostic
services to a variety of genetic disorders. It is imparting teaching/training programs for efficient
manpower development in the specialty and also carry out research activities in basic and applied Human
Genetics, with special reference to DNA based studies.
Services
The department is providing rapid diagnostic cytogenetics investigations for a variety of genetic
disorders referred from clinical departments like Psychiatry and Neurology right from pedigree analysis,
dermatoglyphics, karyotying , molecular cytogenetics studies ( FISH) and Genetic counseling.
Teaching and
Training
Involves both intra and inter disciplinary for post graduates of the Institute at NIMHANS, as well as
for other institutions/Universities in the country on short term basis ( 1-3 months).
Research
Research activities in the field of Genotoxicity, DNA based studies of genetic disorders through PCR
assay, genetic characterization of brain tumors and wound healing.
Infrastructure
The department has adequate facility to carry out the basic diagnosis of genetic disorders and advance
research programs. FISH image analysis, Semi automatic karyotyping set up, Gel documentation system,
thermo cycler, Fluori and spectrophotometer, Incubators, deep freezers ( -85), ovens, fume hood and
tissue culture set up for carrying out basic and advanced studies in Human Genetics.
Ph.D/MD/MS/MDS Program
The department has produced 14 Ph.D and 6 PG, MD/MS/MDS so far. 2 students are now pursuing their Ph.D
program. [Please see Prospectus]
Conferences/Workshops
The department has organized 29th ISHG national conference and an international Indo-French
symposium 2010, on brain tumor genetics. [Please see
current Conferences/Workshops announcements]
Projects and Publications
The Department has many research projects both national and international from various funding
agencies like ICMR, DST, DBT, CSIR and also International agencies like INSERM, France. The department
has published 75 quality research articles in national and international journals and over 200
presentations in various national and international conferences/symposiums. [Please see
