The significations contributions of the Centre are:
- Strengthening injury information systems and completion of
feasibility studies.
- Facilitating and strong advocacy for re-introduction of helmet
legislation.
- Demonstration project on reduction of drinking and driving in the city of
Bangalore.
- Systematic analysis of highway road safety issues.
- Developing programmes for strengthening emergency and trauma
care.
- Major inputs for policy initiatives of Planning Commission,
Expert group on establishing directorate of road safety, development of National road safety
policy and others.
- Establishment of an exclusive suicide prevention help line
- Development of distress prevention help line for adolescents
- Inputs for developing measures to restrict easy availability
of Organophosphorus compounds and drugs in suicide prevention.
- Systematic analysis of violence prevention programmes.
- Research, advocacy, policy strengthening and evaluation.
- Supporting and implementing WHO activities in Violence and Injury

Recognition
- Recognized as WHO Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention
and Safety Promotion
- City of Bangalore was selected by the Global Road Safety
Programme for strengthening road safety in the India region.
- Member of several Expert committees of WHO, World Bank,
Government of India and Karnataka.
- NIMHANS was awarded the Prince Michael and IRTE Institutional
award for contributions to Road Safety work in India.
- Life time achievement award by International Rotary.
- Awarded Best Asia Pacific Paper Award in the Ist Asia Pacific
Conference on Injury Prevention & Control, Perth, Australia, 2003, for the work on risk factors
for suicides.
- Nominated for Haddon Memorial Award at the 3rd International
Conference on Injury Prevention & Control, Melbourne, Australia, 1996., for advance training in
injury epidemiology and research, UCLA School of Public Health, Los Angeles, USA.
- Invited Member of the International Scientific Committee for
World Conference on Injury Prevention & Control in 2008, Merida, Mexico.
Collaboration
The Centre collaborates with number of organizations at local, National and International levels.

department, Transport department, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Road Safety Council,
Bangalore Agenda Task Force, All major hospitals and medical colleges, City based NGOs,
etc.,;Regional (State and South India)- Different departments of the Government of Karnataka:
Health, Education, Police, Road, Transport, Social Welfare; VHAK, CHC, Media, Task Force on
health and family welfare, Census department, Confederation of Indian Industries, State level
NGOs; National - Different Departments of Government of India: Health, Transport; Home,
IIT-New Delhi, ICMR, WHO India Office, National Crime Records Bureau, Planning Commission,
Commission on Macro-Economics and Health, National Human Rights Commissions; and International
